Rental Boat Checkout info

If you have significant sailing experience & can rig and sail a boat independently, as well as right as capsized boat (Lasers, Sunfish and RS Feva) fill out this form to schedule a checkout certification. Checkouts and rentals are only available to club members, but prospective members are welcome to come and take a look at the boats. Checkouts go over the rental rules, equipment location and care, rigging details, and evaluate your sailing skills.  If you were previously checked out on a rental boat, you are still checked out. 

Note: if you wish to do a checkout for a Laser, you must first schedule a lesson in a club Laser unless you have considerable experience sailing a Laser.  Experience sailing a boat similar to a Laser will still require a lesson prior to a checkout. 

In the checkout, you must demonstrate that you can rig and de-rig the boat with minimal assistance and have sufficient sailing skills to get yourself out of trouble if weather conditions suddenly change (which they often do at Union) and avoid damaging the boats.  

The checkout also includes a capsize test, which will likely require you to get fully into the water.  If you are doing a check-out early in the season when the water is cold, you will be required to bring and wear your own wetsuit or a drysuit, in addition to wearing your own life jacket.

There is a $50 check out fee due when you schedule the check-out.  To pay go to the Store,  locate in the banner on the club website. This is fee will apply to Laser, Sunfish and Catalina rentals.
